The Shining Stars Maths programme offers a unique approach compared to traditional one-on-one tutoring. Instead of the typical format where students work independently after some instruction, our programme focuses on engaging, interactive group sessions led by expert teachers.

Key Features of the Shining Stars Maths Programme:

1. Group Sessions: Each session lasts 40 minutes, maximising direct instruction time based on Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction. This ensures that students are actively learning rather than simply completing assignments.

2. Interactive Learning: Students engage with the tutor and each other using microphones, webcams, and an interactive whiteboard, promoting collaboration and discussion.

3. Consolidation Tasks: After each session, students complete a homework task at their own pace. This task reinforces what they’ve learned and is uploaded to the student portal for tutor feedback.

4. Personalised Feedback: Tutors provide feedback, ensuring students receive guidance on their work.

5. Ongoing Support: Students can reach out to their tutors with questions throughout the week using the Student portal, fostering continuous learning and support.

Overall, the Shining Stars Maths programme emphasises active engagement and personalised feedback to enhance students' understanding and confidence in mathematics.

FAQs

Why not 1 to 1 tutoring?
1 to 1 tutoring can lead to an over-reliance on the weekly tutoring sessions rather than developing the independence required for the higher exam grades.

Why is small group learning better?
Students can feel more at ease working in small groups, rather than intense 1 to 1 sessions.  Students will also get the opportunity to work together, comparing answers and supporting one another, much like in a classroom based environment.

Can I book on to more than one session each week?
We currently run one session per week for each year group and ability. If you sign up for the whole year in advance, you are welcome to attend more than one session a week, but they will not be tailored specifically to your age/ability. This can still be useful for revision and targeting any gaps from previous years.

Isn't face to face learning better than online?
With today's technology, working online, our tutors can see the working out of all students simultaneously on the online whiteboard.  In this way, feedback can even be quicker, and more detailed, than in the traditional classroom setting.
